Explore the Levels of Caffeine
Caffeine affects each of us a little differently — shaped by biology, timing, and how the coffee is brewed.
At Espresso Thyme, we believe coffee should support your rhythm, not work against it.
This Roastery Journal entry explores the different levels of caffeine through the lens of espresso vs. brewed coffee, and how late in the day each level is best enjoyed to avoid disrupting your circadian rhythm.
These are not rigid rules — they’re gentle guidelines meant to help you listen to your body and choose coffee that fits your day.
A note on timing & sleep
Caffeine has an average half-life of 5–7 hours, meaning half of it can still be active in your system long after your last sip. As caffeine levels decrease, so does the likelihood of sleep disruption.
The times below reflect general recommendations, not medical advice — and they assume a typical bedtime around 10–11 pm.
☕ Full Caffeine (100%)
Brewed coffee (12oz): 120–150 mg
Espresso (2 shots): 120–140 mg
Latest recommended time to drink: 8–10 hours before sleep
Full caffeine coffee is vibrant, energizing, and expressive. Brewed coffee delivers its caffeine more gradually through volume, while espresso offers a more immediate, concentrated lift.
This level is best enjoyed earlier in the day — morning hikes, slow breakfasts, creative work, or moments when you want coffee to show up with you fully.
Best for: mornings, physical activity, deep focus, intentional starts
☕ 75% Caffeine
Brewed coffee (12oz): 90–110 mg
Espresso (2 shots): 90–105 mg
Latest recommended time to drink: 7–8 hours before sleep
A gentle step down that still feels like “real coffee.” 75% caffeine offers clarity and energy without quite the same intensity, making it a great option for late mornings or early afternoons.
Whether brewed or pulled as espresso, this level supports productivity while beginning to soften the edge.
Best for: late mornings, social cups, steady afternoons
☕ 50% Caffeine
Brewed coffee (12oz): 60–75 mg
Espresso (2 shots): 60–70 mg
Latest recommended time to drink: 6 hours before sleep
Balanced and adaptable, 50% caffeine is where energy meets ease. Brewed coffee feels lighter and more sustained, while espresso keeps structure without excess stimulation.
This is a favorite for people who love coffee throughout the day but want to protect their evening calm.
Best for: early afternoons, mindful pacing, routine sipping
☕ 25% Caffeine
Brewed coffee (12oz): 30–40 mg
Espresso (2 shots): 25–35 mg
Latest recommended time to drink: 4–5 hours before sleep
Soft, grounding, and forgiving — 25% caffeine offers just enough presence to feel cozy without overstimulation.
In espresso form, it’s subtle and ritual-focused; brewed, it’s gentle and lingering.
Best for: late afternoons, transitions, quiet focus
☕ Decaf (≈0–5%)
Brewed coffee (12oz): 2–5 mg
Espresso (2 shots): 2–4 mg
Latest recommended time to drink: Anytime
Decaf is not the absence of coffee — it’s the preservation of comfort. Brewed decaf leans more warm and familiar, while decaf espresso keeps structure without stimulation.
Our decaf offerings are chosen with the same care as full-caf coffees, because rest deserves quality too.
Best for: evenings, nighttime rituals, sensitive sleepers
There will soon be a blog about our decaf coffee, “Decaf by Swiss.”
Choose Your Level
Not sure where to start? Let this be a gentle guide:
I want energy and clarity early → Full Caf (espresso or brewed)
I want coffee without the edge → 75% Caf
I want balance without jitters → 50% Caf
I want ritual more than stimulation → 25% Caf
I want comfort without disruption → Decaf
Your ideal level may change day to day — and that’s the point. Coffee should adapt to your rhythm, not the other way around.
Choosing Coffee That Matches Your Day
There’s no “right” amount of caffeine — only what works for you. Some days call for momentum, others for softness. Coffee can adapt.
At Espresso Thyme, we encourage you to explore caffeine intentionally, sip with awareness, and let your cup support your natural rhythm. We will soon create a line of coffees you can enjoy throughout the day that won’t disrupt your circadian rhythm.
Good espresso takes thyme. Rest does too.
I created a chart including iced coffee and cold brew, I hope this helps!
